Guppy Grass

This is a category of aquatic plant groups. Although this is known to be a quickly getting bigger aquatic plant category. This is common to be known by some other terms. Nymph and najas grass are the terms that are frequently used for the guppy grass. Also, this is a most regularly growing aquatic plant inside aquatic environments. That is always better for the beginners and even for the experts who are going to begin an aquarium.

The plant type is adaptable and although it is hard always in the nature of it.

The aquarium beginners can select one from a pair of options in the growing theme. They can make the plants floating on the water. Other than that, the aquatic plant could be planted on the substrate. If anyone is with the idea of planting these guppy grass inside an aquarium certainly this article would be helpful for such a community.

More details

The scientific name of this grass type is the Najas guadalupensis. Caring for them is easy. Although these grasses won’t require higher light sources. Most of the time it only required less powerful and medium powerful light sources. It has a higher progressing rate. For the development of this plant category, there would be no required for extra fertilizers. The color of the grasses is light green. Although those will be in the dark green color too.

Origin

The grass is owned by the Genus Najas. That is called water nymph too. The type of this Genus is initially discovered in 1753. These are allocated for the Kingdom of Plantae. That is in the family of the Hydrocharitaceae.

Habitat

This is indigenous to North America. And even the grasses are widely spread in those regions. Apart from that, the guppy grass could be found in countries like Mexico, South America, Canada, and Asian regions. In order to explore these guppy grass, there are certain locations that should have to be searched. Those are such as the quickly flowing water streams and near to the lakes. That is always regarded as an invasive species of grass too.

Features

This is an annually submerging grass type. The plants are having slender stems with branches. The stems are long. The plants will grow up to the maximum height up to 90 cm. Sometimes those are growing a little taller than this height. The leaves of the guppy grass are narrower. Although the leaves of them are flexible and even thin. The grasses are producing small-sized flowers. Although white roots are possessed by the grasses.

Tank Size

There is no much matter about the tank size of the grasses that should be planted inside or keep them floated inside. Even these grasses could be placed inside of the tanks in nano-sized. But they are growing faster. Therefore the minimum size of the tank that has to be planted is 10 gallons. Therefore arrange a bit larger space with a volume of 10 gallons.

Required water qualities

In order to grow these grasses better, there are some qualities that should be with the water. The following are such qualities.

  • Temperature – The temperature of the water should be between 20 – 26°C. Always it tolerated wide ranges of temperature.
  • pH value – The required pH value for the growth of these grasses are on between 6.0-8.0
  • Hardness – Both the male soft and hard water could be able to tolerate the grasses. The tolerance rate of the hardiness has to be balanced between the 2 – 20 GH.

Required substrate

These grasses are known to be a floating category of plants. But that could be planted on the substrates that are on the tanks easily. But to plant them, there is always no need for nutritionally rich components. Therefore instead of that maintain the overall tank healthy and make sure that there are sufficient needs are available for the growth of these grasses types.

Lightening

As stated in the previous paragraphs, these grasses don’t want strong lightning sources. It is better to have lowly or medium lightning sources. Therefore light must be kept switched on for the period of 12 hours maximum. If it is not possible make sure the lights are switched on at least for 8 hours.

But aquarists have to be aware of something. To make the plant more green the light source has to be strong. But the strong light sources would be caused by turning the plants red in color.

Planting and the Propagation

As stated in the previous description, there are two ways of planting these grasses. But most aquarists will choose the floating method due to their comfort. Just assume that if someone had chosen the planting method. Then that person has to divide the stem into more parts and then have to plant it in the substrate.

While planting that has to be planted under 2 inches deep in the substrate. Although the grasses won’t have a stronger rooting system. Then the other method is floating. If anyone prefers the floating method, then the stem has to be divided in the same way. Then place them on the water. Although if anyone prefers, he can follow both ways. That person can plant some of these grasses and although keep some floated on the water. Both of these methods will be effective for planting.

Maintenance

Maintenance of these grasses is simpler than you think. The only thing that the aquarists pay attention to is the overrunning of the grasses. Make sure that the grasses allow the overrunning out of the tank. Although trimming has to be done at the perfect times.

Benefits that could be obtained

The main advantage is providing shelter to the tank. It provides more hiding places for the fishes. Although the grasses would help to maintain the whole nutritional level inside the tank. It will always maintain better water quality while the removal of unnecessary substances.

These are some of the basic details regarding the guppy grass. If any aquarists have an idea about planting these grasses carefully read this and get a brief idea about that. Gaining an idea is always advantageous.
